What is FYS 101
First Year Seminar (FYS 101) is a one-credit, semester long course that is designed to support students by fostering an understanding of their personal identity, campus resources, and the greater Syracuse community to enhance their transition to Syracuse University, a university welcoming to all. Through interactive seminar activities, a Shared Experience, and Home College Experiences, students will articulate and develop a plan to achieve their academic and personal goals. Students will be prepared to navigate diverse perspectives and contribute positively to the communities they are a part of, at Syracuse University and beyond, as engaged citizens.
What to Expect
All new first-year and transfer students will engage with their peers across disciplines; small class sizes composed of students from different majors will help students expand their interpersonal skills. Each section of FYS 101 is taught by a faculty, staff, or graduate student Lead Instructor and an undergraduate Peer Leader who will assist students in guided conversations, experiential activities, and reflective exercises to explore their transition to campus, enhance their sense of belonging to Syracuse University and beyond, and introduce skills to foster their engaged citizenship. Engagement with academic articles, podcasts, TedTalks, case studies, videos, campus and community engagement, and reflection forms the basis for active learning in the course.
Shared Experience
The FYS 101 Shared Experience is an experiential learning opportunity for students to explore a campus or community resource outside of the classroom during week 4 of the semester.
Home College Experience
The FYS 101 Home College Experience (HCE) provides discipline-specific opportunities for students to connect to and build community within their home school/college through three programs planned and communicated to students by their primary school/college. While each school/college HCE opportunities are different, all are aligned with the goals of FYS 101 by fostering a strong sense of belonging and success within one’s home school or college.
