Student Learning Outcomes


1. Analyze aspects of the history and geography of South Asia

2. Contrast and critique various social, economic, and political dimensions of South Asia including but not limited to: gender, caste, class, education, law, health, ethnicity, national identity, and religion

3. Interpret the diverse functions and cultural meanings of expressive culture in South Asia

4. Analyze key processes of modernity and globalization within and among South Asian nations

5. Develop ideas and arguments about South Asia in writing

Certificate Requirements


The Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) in South Asian Studies is available to Syracuse University students in all graduate programs who are looking to supplement their degree with an interdisciplinary approach to the cultures, politics, history, arts, and current events of this region. Students are required to complete at least twelve (12) credits.

Students matriculated in any MA or PhD program at Syracuse University and who have completed 12 graduate credit-hours in courses dealing with South Asia are eligible to apply to the Director of the South Asia Center for the Certificate of Advanced Study in South Asia. The Director shall determine that the courses listed by the student meet the requirements for the Certificate.

*Some South Asian content is included (30% or more). Students may use these courses for the certificate only if they write their research paper on a South Asian topic.
