About the College

The College of Arts and Sciences (A&S) is Syracuse University’s founding college and its intellectual heart and soul. Home to the liberal arts, its 360 faculty members teach nearly 6,000 students in 23 buildings.

A&S helps each student build their path to success through interdisciplinary teaching and learning, research, scholarship, and service. With liberal arts at the core of highly personalized education, students develop their capacity to think critically, communicate clearly, and solve complex problems through analysis and understanding of data–skills important to every life and applicable to any field.

In partnership with the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs  (Maxwell) A&S offers rigorous programs in the sciences and mathematics, humanities, and social sciences, along with interdepartmental and interdivisional programs. Students can hone their academic passion into a career path in alignment with their interests and values.

Our graduate students - mentored by nationally and internationally renowned scholars, writers, and scientists - are immersed in an environment of academic rigor, research, and creativity where they develop the tools and skills needed to effect change and generate new knowledge and ideas in their chosen fields.

Together with Maxwell, A&S comprises 22 departments that offer more than 50 majors, 58 minors, and 30 master’s and Ph.D. programs. It also offers a number of selected studies, independent study, dual and combined degree programs, as well as interdisciplinary degree options with Syracuse University’s professional schools and colleges at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
