Description
The M.F.A. program is dedicated to experimentation and exploration within a wide range of photographic and conceptual practices. The curriculum, comprised of seminars, critiques, visiting artist meetings and lectures, tutorials and courses in history, theory and criticism, provides a pluralistic approach to the medium, giving graduate students a nuanced understanding of photography as it relates to contemporary art practice. Our facilities are equipped for work in digital photography and analogue practices, with separate studios for graduate students including high resolution film scanners, large-format archival inkjet printers and a dedicated black and white lab. Digital SLR’s, medium-and large-format film cameras, and an extensive array of lighting equipment are available for student use, along with shooting studio equipped for all formats of digital and analog photography. Graduate students also benefit from the department’s close association with Light Work, a nonprofit organization on campus that sponsors an internationally renowned visiting artist program and exhibitions in the Kathleen O. Sullivan Gallery. In addition, the Department of Transmedia maintains its own gallery space for exhibitions and events. In keeping with the global reach of Syracuse University, graduate students have the opportunity to study abroad in Berlin, Moscow and Venice, and with other World Partners.
