Overview:

The Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) in Enterprise Technology Leadership (ETL) is an interdisciplinary CAS designed by key representatives of The School of Information Studies (iSchool), The College of Engineering & Computer Science, and The Martin J. Whitman School of Management. The curriculum is designed to fit the needs of working professionals in a variety of fields who are working toward or aspire to be in technology leadership roles. The CAS is also designed to assist companies in cultivating technology leadership within their organization. Our employer relations team can help design a cohort program within your company.

After a nine-credit primary core which exposes students to the three schools with three required courses, students choose two additional electives, or six credits, from one of the listed disciplinary areas that most aligns with their professional and academic interests. All credits earned are transferrable into a full-degree Master’s program in each of the schools. This certificate is campus based with the ability to complete some coursework online. The CAS in ETL can be completed as a full-time or part-time student. All candidates should have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent.

Student Learning Outcomes

The CAS in Enterprise Technology Leadership will emphasize three types of foundational skills essential to today’s technology leaders:

1. Leadership: CAS in ETL graduates will be able to apply best practices in leadership and decision making to their selected disciplinary area.

2. Project Management: CAS in ETL graduates will be able to apply best practices in technology project management to their disciplinary area, recognizing that technology projects involve organizational change and therefore must be managed appropriately to engage stakeholders in the change effort.

3. Technology: CAS in ETL graduates will be able to design appropriate technology architectures and systems in the student’s disciplinary area that integrate with an enterprise’s strategic goals.

In addition, through taking electives in one of the listed disciplinary areas, CAS in ETL graduates will be able to:

1. Build a strong and flexible technology infrastructure in their disciplinary area that can adapt to changing enterprise strategies and conditions involving scalability, resilience, flexibility and re-use of technical solutions and best practices;

2. Define options for related technologies in their disciplinary area that can provide innovative solutions for strategic business goals and objectives in enterprises, and evaluate these options against the constraints and opportunities of a given scenario;

3. Work productively together with distributed and culturally diverse peers and colleagues of various experience levels through purposeful and effective communication as modeled in the learning environment of the program.

Curriculum

This certificate requires 15 graduate credits. All courses are three (3) graduate credits unless specified otherwise.

I. Primary Core (9 credits)

All students must take MBC 639 or MBC 645, and MAE 548 and IST 645

II. Electives (6 credits)

Students must choose two electives from one of the listed disciplinary areas below

ELE 590/690 - Special topics courses in this disciplinary area may also be counted as electives in topic areas such as Smart Grid Systems or Power Electronics

Earn Credit towards a Master’s Degree:

While the CAS in Enterprise Technology Leadership is primarily a standalone program, credits earned in the CAS can be used toward a master’s degree in certain target degrees. You can incorporate CAS classes into select Syracuse University master’s curriculums, which means you can graduate with a certified and highly marketable skill set without taking extra classes.
