The master’s degree program in broadcast and digital journalism is designed to provide the necessary combination of practical training and theoretical study to prepare students for careers in electronic journalism. All students take required coursework in writing, information gathering and reporting, editing, producing, and anchoring for both traditional and new media platforms. No previous training in broadcasting or journalism is required.
The final on-campus capstone course for the master’s degree involves the production of two daily newscasts. Newscast production takes place in our state-of-the-art combined newsroom and HD studio. The newsroom space includes 27 workstations equipped with ENPS© (a widely used news production system), Adobe Premiere Pro © for video editing and Ross XPression © for graphic creation. The studio portion features fully robotic cameras, a video wall, a touchscreen powered by Story Teller® software,an anchor desk and interview area. The adjacent control room is fully automated with Ross Overdrive © technology. Student journalists are also able to report live from the scene of news stories using Dejero © portable equipment.
The Broadcast and Digital Journalism program will have an on-campus capstone, and concludes with a summer seminar and internship in Washington, D.C.
The Broadcast and Digital Journalism program offers a Sports Media & Communications Track, which allows students to utilize skills learned in the Broadcast and Digital Journalism program core and apply them to Sports Media & Communications. This track includes an introductory sports media communications summer course, specialized sports media electives and a choice of a sports media or a Washington D.C. internship.
The Master of Science (M.S.) in Broadcast and Digital Journalism is a 40-credit program.
The Master of Science (M.S.) in Broadcast and Digital Journalism with a track in Sports Media & Communications is a 40-41 credit program.
