Overview

Syracuse University’s Maxwell and Whitman Schools offer a dual-degree program combining the knowledge and abilities of the Master of Arts in International Relations (MAIR) and the skills and knowledge of the Master of Science in Finance (MS Finance).  Over two years of study, students will complete 58 credits of coursework drawn from both schools.

The MAIR-MS Finance will prepare students for careers in global corporate finance and financial markets jobs and opportunity to capitalize on the methodological and analytical training of the Whitman School and the international affairs context and leadership development skills of the Maxwell School.

MAIR-MSF students will work closely with Syracuse University faculty on main campus and in Washington, DC, among other university campuses around the globe. This provides the opportunity to bridge theory and clinical practice, while tailoring a learning experience to the needs of a students interested in working in international corporate or public finance careers.

The joint-degree program will integrate core courses offered by both schools with a rich selection of electives and practical experiences in the form of internships.

Master of Science in Finance


Students will complete the requirements for the Master of Science in Finance, including 15 credits of core coursework and 12 credits of electives.

Master of Arts in International Relations


Students will complete the requirements for the Master of Arts in International Relations, including 13 credits of core requirements, a three credit signature course, 12 credits of career track coursework, and a three credit elective. Students are also required to complete an internship for credit and demonstrate proficiency in a second modern foreign language.

Signature Course (3 credits)

A selection of interdisciplinary approaches to international affairs, drawn from the Maxwell School’s graduate offerings.

International Relations Career Track (12 credits)

Four courses in one of the five career tracks offered for the international relations MA, as detailed in the course catalog entry.

International Relations Elective (3 credits)

The international relations elective can be drawn from any other graduate class within the Maxwell School.
