Coaching Minor

Program Description:

The regulations of the Commissioner of Education of the New York State Department of Education require persons who coach an interscholastic athletic team to complete an approved program for coaches prior to or within the first three years of their employment. (Valid First Aid, CPR and child abuse certificates are required for initial employment.)
This coaching minor is designed to provide students with all the requirements to seek the NYSED coaching certification, while also preparing students to be coaches in schools, sports clubs, community programs, colleges, or other athletic organizations.

Admission to the Minor:

Students must apply to the minor by October 15 in the fall or March 15 in the spring. Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 grade point average to be eligible for this minor.

Students must take at least 12 credits at the 300-level or above. 

Student Learning Outcomes


Upon completion of the minor, students will be able to:

1. Apply for certification to coach in public schools in New York State.

2. Demonstrate the ability to apply practical athletic coaching skills to real world sporting settings and events.

3. Discuss the principles of biology, anatomy, physiology, and kinesiology related to coaching; risk minimization; mixed competition; NYSED selection and classification of athletes; age and maturity of athletes.

4. Utilize the philosophies, methods and strategies involved in coaching and apply them to coaching athletic teams.

5. Explain the rules, duties, legal aspects and regulation guidelines, surrounding coaching athletic teams.

Note:


Fingerprinting is also required for appointment to coaching positions.
