Graduate

The Master of Science in Sport Venue and Event Management is a 36-credit hour graduate program designed to provide students with the educational knowledge, skill development, and experiential sport industry background to excel in the specialized field of managing multi-purpose sport venues and associated event planning opportunities. Instruction centers around core curriculum content areas, including sport finance, accounting, and budgeting; sport event and hospitality management; organizational theory; sport law and legal operations management; technology and information delivery systems; facilities and venue management; communications; and event planning operations and management. The goal is to prepare graduates to think conceptually and analytically and be able to apply principles to a real-world scenario.

The program, housed in the Falk College, includes faculty from the Department of Sport Management, School of Information Studies, S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, and the Martin J. Whitman School of Management at Syracuse University. The program is an interdisciplinary, collaborative initiative unique among graduate level sport management programs.

The degree prepares students for careers in managerial aspects of professional and recreational sports, including stadium and arena facilities management; production and programming of events; marketing and public relations; technological operations management; and middle-level management, marketing, and planning in the sport industry.

In addition to the Sport Venue and Event Management MS program, the department also offers an online master’s degree in Sport Analytics, as well as an online Certificate of Advanced Study (CAS) in Sport Analytics.

The 36 credit  Master of Science degree in Sport Analytics requires the completion of 10 required core courses, which cover basic and advanced visualization skills, coding in R and Python, database and SQL usage, linear regression, and machine learning techniques using data directly related to either the team/player or business side of the sport industry. In addition to the required courses, students choose two elective courses which concentrate on analytics applications related to collective bargaining agreements for various sports.   Each course in the degree is 8-weeks in length and delivered online in an asynchronous format.

The 12-credit Certificate of Advance Study in Sport Analytics explores different types of statistics used for analysis of player/team performance and business performance across different sports and leagues and become proficient in both visualizing and analyzing sport data. Coursework covers specific focus areas of sport analytics statistics and methods, visualization tools, programming in R and Python, linear regression and econometric techniques, and machine learning tools.

The CAS in sport analytics has four courses (12 credits total), each highlighting a specific aspect of the necessary employment qualifications, including visualization, coding and basic data modeling. Program faculty are leaders in the fields of sport analytics, economics, and data visualization and modeling who have the mathematical and analytical backgrounds-and industry connections-that advantage students in their classes and beyond. Each eight-week course is delivered asynchronously online.

Facilities

The Falk College is conveniently located near Syracuse University’s JMA Wireless Dome, the only multi-purpose domed sports facility on a college campus. The cornerstone of the Syracuse University sport management program has been its multitude of experiential learning opportunities associated with its theory-to-practice approach to teaching. In conjunction with the Syracuse Athletics Department, the JMA Wireless Dome is a ‘living laboratory’ for students.
