Founded in 1877, the Rose, Jules R. and Stanford S. Setnor School of Music has a storied tradition of training well-rounded thinkers and exceptional performers. Consisting of four departments: Applied Music and Performance; Music Composition Theory and History; Music Education; and Music Industry and Technologies, the school’s curriculum is guided by faculty who believe in developing graduates with diverse areas of knowledge and expertise and who are well prepared for meaningful, gainful work in the profession.

In addition to semesters of study at campus centers in London and Los Angeles, the Setnor School of Music has robust educational relationships with other entities on campus including the Department of Art and Music Histories, the School of Education , the Martin J. Whitman School of Management and the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications . Setnor also maintains a professional recording studio in Bird Library’s Belfer Audio Archives.

The Setnor School of Music offers both large and small, auditioned and non-auditioned, classical and jazz/commercial vocal and instrumental ensembles to members of the Syracuse University community. In addition to these performance experiences are opportunities to participate in two NCAA Division I athletic bands: The Pride of the Orange Syracuse University Marching Band and the Sour Sitrus Society University Pep Band.

The majority of the 200+ concerts presented by the Setnor School of Music each year are held in the historic Setnor Auditorium. The Rose and Jules R. Setnor Auditorium is a 650-seat concert hall in Crouse College that houses a 3,823-pipe Holtkamp Organ below a 70-foot-high open timber roof and stained-glass windows. Most performances are streamed live. Setnor students also have opportunities to perform elsewhere on campus including Shaffer Art Building’s Shemin Auditorium, Hendricks Chapel, the Goldstein Auditorium in the Schine Student Center, the K.G Tan Auditorium in the D’Aniello Institute for Veterans & Military Families, and the JMA Wireless Dome.
