Description

The Masters of Science in Public Health (MSPH) is a 42-credit hour graduate program designed to provide students with core knowledge and skills necessary for conducting research in the area of public health. Students may choose from two possible tracks: “Global Health” and “Health Data Analytics”.  

Admission:

Entry to the accelerated Public Health BS/MS program is a 2-stage process.  1) Undergraduate stage:  Students initiate interest in the program no later than 2nd semester sophomore year.  Interested students meet with the undergraduate program director to determine if the program can be completed within the 5-year time period.  After meeting with the undergraduate director, students confirm their interest by completing ‘An Intent to Pursue’ form.  A personal statement, note of support from the academic advisor, and UG GPA of 3.3 is required. 2)  Graduate program application stage: Students formally apply to the graduate program during the fall of the senior year. A personal statement, letters of recommendation, and an UG GPA of 3.0 is required for this application.  The GRE is not required.

Part-Time Study

Program may be pursued on a part-time basis with department approval.

Financial Support

Limited department financial aid is available in the form of graduate assistantships and scholarship credits for students enrolled in masters and doctoral programs. Financial aid is determined based on merit.

Transfer Credit

Students may transfer up to 9 credits. Substituted/transferred course work should cover material equivalent to that which is covered in the relevant required course. Substitution/transfer requests will need to be approved by the graduate director. Students transferring courses from another institution must file a program of study prior to completing 12 credits at Syracuse University.

1. Affect positive changes in health through research, policy analysis and evidence-based health programming.
2. Conduct independent, original, theory-based public health research.
3. Apply analytic methods to the analysis of public health data (specific to Health Data Analytics track).
4. Explain health issues in the context of the global community (specific to Global Health track).

  • Elective - 3 credits - Students choose 1 elective in consultation with their advisor.

Satisfactory Progress:


Certification for graduation with an advanced degree at Syracuse University requires a minimum average of 3.0 for work comprising the program for the degree and a 2.8 average for all credits earned.

Program Milestone


Foundational Public Health Training:  By the end of their first semester, students entering the Public Health, MS degree program must successfully complete Public Health Foundations Training requirement. This is a non-credit bearing requirement. Exception: Students who have graduated from a CEPH accredited BSPH program are exempt from this requirement.
