Degree Requirements:

The Joint JD/LLM in Advocacy and Litigation allows law students to earn both their JD and LLM in three years. The program makes it possible for students with an interest in litigation to gain additional experience, as well as a degree reflecting their specialized learning focus, while simultaneously earning their JD at the same institution.

Obtaining the LLM portion of the joint degree requires the completion of 25 credit hours specifically designated as counting toward the LLM. The JD requires the completion of 87 credit hours. A total of 6 credits are attributed to both degrees. Therefore, a student obtaining a joint JD/LLM in Advocacy and Litigation completes a total of 106 credits with 19 of those credits counting exclusively to the LLM. There are 13 mandatory LLM credits. Students select the remaining 12 credits from a designed list of elective courses.

Through the combination of required and elective courses and experiential opportunities with our intercollegiate competition teams, students will be able to focus their studies in one of three areas:  Trial Advocacy, Appellate Advocacy, or Alternative Dispute Resolution.

Students with general questions and inquiries concerning procedures regarding joint degrees should contact the College of Law Registrar’s Office, Dineen Hall, lawstudentrecords@syr.edu.
